WHAT IS KAWAII STYLE?

Kawaii is a Japanese term that literally translates to “cute”. It initially referred to illustrations and cartoons in magazines, comics and books. It is now used colloquially to refer to the style of fashion and design which emphasizes the quality of cuteness.
Kawaii originated in Japan, where it was coined as “kawai” (“cute”) in the early 20th century. A kawaii school may be called a “kawaii school”. It has become a popular term used across Asia to describe a range of Japanese fashions influenced by anime and Japanimation, with some designs being highly distinctive from those of other regions.
The word kawaii first appeared in English around 2009 with the use of it by an American company for its stock market ticker symbol KWEI (Kao Weiwu International) . The acronym is formed from the two words “kawai-ism” and can be capitalized as KAWAII. However, the term has come into wider use as a general term for any style or trend that is cute, especially when applied to specific styles or trends such as kawaii hair or clothing styles.
Though originally used in Japan , kawaii has also moved overseas into other parts of Asia including Taiwan, Thailand , South Korea , Hong Kong and China . Some countries have even created their own versions of kawaii and are known as kawaii-ism ers or kawaiism ers .

2. A Brief History of Kawaii
The Japanese word for “cute”, “kawaii” literally means “delicate”.
The dictionary defines it as a style that emphasizes the quality of cuteness, using bright colors and characters with a childlike appearance. The term was coined in Japan by a Japanese illustrator, Yasuhiko Yamauchi, who published his own illustrated dictionary in 1967 to describe the style of the characters in his series “Kawaii Koroshiya”, which he calls “Koroshiya-tai” (“Cuteness Tear”).
In 1970, Yamauchi established “Sakura Koroshiya Co.”, which is one of the oldest and largest companies in Japan specializing in character design for manga and anime. In 1989, Sakura Koroshiya Co. became part of Takara Tomy (the leading toy company) under the name Sakura Koroshiya Co., Ltd., however it continues to operate independently today.
3. Characteristics of Kawaii
Kawaii is a Japanese character style based on the concept of cuteness, combining children’s drawings with a sense of simplicity.
The style is largely associated with Japanese manga (manga) and anime (animation), but also finds much use in other artistic fields such as fashion, photography, music and web design.
The term “kawaii” itself does not appear in the English language until its introduction by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963 for The Fantastic Four issue #2. The earliest explicit instance of this word used in English was as part of a title for the 1966 film The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, which was released by Warner Bros. Pictures.
In Japan, kawaii was coined by author Kiki Yanagi in 1989 to describe her popular book “Kawaii”, which describes how ordinary objects can be transformed into endearing characters when they are presented with proper aesthetic appeal. Yanagi coined “kawaii” to mean “childlike”, or “cute”, and it gained widespread popularity through her work.
